Today I took my 2 and a half year old x3 to the dealership for scheduled service and reported a malfunction that appeared on the screen last week:. Limited chassis stabilization and traction. Have the system checked by the nearest BMW center. When this happened I called BMW and they said not to worry about it just to book for service. The error disappeared after I switched the car off that day and hasn't come back.

Nothing felt any different while driving the car. Unusual, but certainly not unheard of. If the battery has been sent flat a few times in its life you can expect this. Environmental conditions also affect battery life There may be a battery life counter to reset to zero, but anyone with a commercial quality scan tool should be able to do this. X3s are well known for the battery issues, if you don't drive them regularly and at certain speeds for certain periods the battery slowly loses charge and fails.

Cold weather makes the problem worse. Is this really out of warranty? Batteries are generally considered to be consumable. Battery warranties usually top out at 24 months, but some aftermarket batteries carry a 3 year warranty. I'd say you just got unlucky. Battery life can vary greatly and usually range from 2 to 5 years, depending on usage and as techoguy said, environmental conditions. If you make lots of short trips especially starting it up to move it around, swap cars on the driveway etc with few longer trips then shorter battery lifespan is to be expected.

Is this just for replacing the battery, or is other rectification work required as well? If it's just for the battery, then that's outrageous. As I was told, the battery is not charging properly so it caused the error I mentioned above.

I had a staff that had a 1 series BMW that had a failing battery. We tried to recondition it with a good charger took 2 days , then change driving habit to include a long drive once a fortnight, been problem free since, no new battery required.

Jesus, thats an effort Worst I've encountered so far is my R33, needing to remove the rear strut tower brace to get to the battery if it's a decent size any replacement bigger than the little Japanese batteries they came with.

But even that is only half an hour or so. I currently have an X3 3. My previous car was an X5. As I parked my X5 in a locked garage, I was in the habit of leaving the car unlocked. After a year or so, it started throwing all manner of strange errors.

I don't recall a 4x4 error but there was weird and seemingly battery irrelevant stuff. According to the dealer, it was suffering from perpetually-low battery. The battery was amazingly expensive because it was an absorbent glass mat battery AGM. AGM batteries are supposed to last a long time and withstand high current drain.

I traded the car at 6 years old and I never had to replace that battery. Locking the car at night made the weirdness stop. I had a E60 i that had the battery fail after 3. I complained and said that was ridiculous and that I was in the process of looking for a new car and after that news it might be an Audi or a Mercedes.
