Jaguar's first SUV, the F-Pace, drives JLR sales to record levels

Has Jaguar been wasting its time for the past 17 years, with the endless honing of its saloon cars into best-in-class driving machines? If you look at the most recent retail sales figures for the company, you could well argue exactly that.

Over our month window, the XE compact saloon clocked sales of 34, — a very healthy jump over the previous period. Can the new one make as big an impact? But the full-year total for the XE will probably be just under 43, units. The XF is in rather worse shape. Over the same 10 months just 28, were sold, which adds up to a likely global total of 35, units over 12 months. But Mercedes sold more than , E-Class saloons and estates globally in The XJ, meanwhile, looks like it will come in under 10, sales for the 12 months to April this year.

Sure, the same thing has happened to Porsche and Volvo. But Jaguar saloons seem destined to remain very small sales fry. A big, Range Rover-size J-Pace seems inevitable. Jaguar sales figures show SUVs are the future. Jaguar's saloon sales are respectable, but it's the SUV figures that driving the business.

Join the debate Comments. I've nothing against the SUVs. But Jaguar would be much the poorer without its saloons or sportscars.

Perhaps the main issue is, now that Jaguar have a small toehold in the Germans' premium saloon domain, they need to work on improving particular things. Especially the distinctiveness of the styling, the interior quality, interior space as far as the XE is concerned and the breadth of the range sportbrakes, coupes etc etc.

A smaller hatch an XC? Maybe it should be a bit like the old RD-6 concept - something different to set it apart. Log in or register to post comments. Jaguar should focus on. However if they do make an XC they need to make it like nothing that has gone before not another me too car.

The XF, while roomy, aesthetically fails to appeal to me sidewise - the new 5 is a very good looking car in non M-Sport guise. Personally the F-Pace appeals more emotionally and practically than the saloons, and from its sales many others feel the same way, justifiably I feel.

TStag, with the new 3 series. TStag, with the new 3 series around the corner, I see XE sales falling off. Jag are making the right choices. The F-Pace is brilliant and practical as a sole family car. The E-Pace will entice away buyers from the very popular X1 - hate the old model all you want but it sold exceptionally well in Europe. And the I-Pace will be a pioneering trendsetter at its price range - Tesla has now been warned.

I do wish Jag sticks with the. I do wish Jag sticks with the XJ though, an equally radical replacement would be fabulous and an antidote to the current large German stodgemobiles. This continued mania for SUVs. This continued mania for SUVs is very depressing. This new E Pace will be rather off the pace by launch, certainly in terms of emissions. But does anyone care? Remember when hatchbacks were. Remember when hatchbacks were the future? Even now, 'peak SUV' has arguably passed the mantle to the crossover.
