    The engine is plenty strong with hp and when you're on the expressway and pound it, it goes like stink. All of them were interested in finding a sucker buddy to drive them around on a tour of some local wineries. You still haven't turned off your adblocker or whitelisted our site. It also hiccupped a few times under full throttle shifting, like when entering an expressway.

    I've driven three different GL variants now: Like the others, the sticker is a bit higher than I'd like, but we've had test cars in here that were fairly well loaded with options. They all have driven wonderfully, and frankly, the typical Mercedes-Benz customer probably doesn't care what the thing costs. So either it's arguably worth it, or the price doesn't matter.

    Though my first choice would be the diesel GL Bluetec, the GL line is arguably the best-driving seven-seater on the market. With this GL packing the twin-turbocharged V8, not so much. According to the on-dash mpg instrument, I was averaging about Overall though, this truck is superb. Comfortable in the extreme, quiet, and smooth in the way it glides along. The interior is beautifully built and comfortable.

    All that said and I've said this before , if I was going buy a new GL, the diesel would be the one. Saw a white one on the road the other day; that'd be the color I would get. The power is impressive, especially considering the girth involved here. The cabin is classy, comfortable and posh.

    It's quiet, and with the windows down, a relaxing breeze rolls through the chamber. Some layouts make it feel like a wind tunnel -- not this one. The GL, especially with the big engine, has presence. It feels almost like a muscle truck, and on the expressway the V8 really takes off effortlessly. The chassis is nicely calibrated, and it can conquer ruts and bumps in nearly all circumstances. The cargo area in back is huge with the seats folded down, though I didn't need to stow anything.

    Mercedes does an excellent job with the wheels, headlights and styling cues that add bling and character. Unlike seemingly everyone else, I like the electronic safety features. It's nice to get a gentle nudge when you stray off course. You're driving the road-going equivalent of the Queen Elizabeth II. Why not have a little help? Though I didn't look to deactivate them -- maybe I should have.

    When you hit the dotted white line, it gives the steering wheel a little jolt that feels like small rumble strips. If you venture over a solid white line, that's when it corrects with the wheel.

    That didn't bother me too much, except when trying to make a quick move, hitting the turn signal as you start crossing lines. The Pre-Safe braking concerned me little more. I was cruising down a set of two lanes with the left lane stopped and the right lane traveling at about 40 mph.

    A car stopped to cut in about 50 yards ahead of me, which I saw, and was going to go around on the shoulder as I broke. Instead, as I put my foot down to slow, the brake pedal dropped out from under me as it went into full panic mode. I pointed the wheel right and went around after it loosened up. I see the point of the system, and it will prevent accidents. But it does seem rather intrusive, braking well before I needed to clamp down.

    I'd like it in bumper-to-bumper traffic, when you might look down and let your foot off the brake. But in traffic the Distronic Plus cruise control works great, 70 to 0 to Everyone I showed was impressed. Love the camera system in this baby. You have the front, the rear, and the bird's eye.
